LA PLATA, Md. (AP) - Charles County Sheriff’s Department deputies have arrested the driver of a car they say struck four pedestrians near a La Plata elementary school.

Major Joe Montminy says three young children and a 17-year-old were sitting on a curb waiting for a school bus when a vehicle veered from the roadway and struck them.

Patients four and nine-years-old were flown to National Children’s Medical Center in Washington, D.C. A second nine-year-old was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. The 17-year old was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The children were believed to be students at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School in La Plata.

Montminy says charges are pending against the female motorist who was arrested in Waldorf’s Saint Charles area a short time later.

The incident remains under investigation.
