Last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.:

“Is there any decaf in here?”

— Live-wired ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale as he burst into the press room after his customary crowd surfing among the Cameron Crazies

The Cameron Crazies — worrisome of late simply for their sheer proximity to the floor rather than their rapier wit — produced a far shorter cheer sheet for the game than for the teams’ meeting in Durham a year ago.

Along with their old standbys — “Sweat Gary Sweat” and “Not our rivals!” — the Crazies were informed “Greivis Vasquez claims to love playing on the road, but let him have it anyway” but not to “go after D.J. Strawberry’s dad. That’s not classy.”

First on the agenda for Joe Pagliuca’s Senior Night, though, was mentioning Maryland coach Gary Williams’ comments Tuesday about Duke’s merry band of tent-pitchers being “no crazier than here. … They hand out sheets to practice their cheers. If you think all that stuff is spur-of-the-moment that you see on television, I’ve got an exclusive for you.”

It was suggested if students “needed any extra motivation, there it is” — right there on the sheet.
