Somewhere, a quality mid-major or mediocre BCS conference team was none too pleased with the developments at the Ervin Nutter Center on Tuesday night.

Wright State, rescued from basketball purgatory by first-year coach Brad Brownell, fended off Butler for the second time in a month to earn its first NCAA berth since 1993 and only the second in school history.

(As an aside, Brownell was the guy who nearly took UNC Wilmington past George Washington in the first round last year. The guy can flat-out coach).

It’s great for the Raiders, who have quietly played the best ball in the Horizon since the start of February. And it’s tough to make the case they aren’t worthy; it’s unlikely any No. 3 or No. 4 seed will be pleased to see them.

Of course, this might have been the worst possible thing to happen to Drexel. Or Old Dominion. Or Missouri State. None of those teams get a chance to respond this weekend, their conference tournaments done already.

So for now, Drexel is out on this board, consigned to root against Kansas State and Purdue and Clemson and their ilk for the rest of the week. But all is not lost, and it would be little surprise if the committee still reached for the Dragons — assuming there aren’t any more surprises with all the Wright moves.
