Exactly what?

Why are we here? The question looms throughout Tom Stoppard’s existentialist play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.” Though it may never be answered, there is a solid explanation of why the District’s Studio Theatre (1501 14th St. NW) is restaging the work through June 24 in its Mead Theatre: “R&G;” is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and has been tapped as part of the Shakespeare in Washington festivities.
