Exactly what?

Why are we here? The question looms throughout Tom Stoppard’s existentialist play “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.” Though it may never be answered, there is a solid explanation of why the District’s Studio Theatre (1501 14th St. NW) is restaging the work through June 24 in its Mead Theatre: “R&G;” is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and has been tapped as part of the Shakespeare in Washington festivities. (Its lead characters, after all, were plucked straight from the Bard’s “Hamlet.”) Call 202/332-3300 or visit. www.studiotheatre.org.
