Britney speaks

Britney Spears says she “hit rock bottom” earlier this year.

In a message posted on her Web site about the end of her marriage and her time in rehab, she calls rehab “a very humbling place” and denies that alcohol or depression sent her there, Associated Press reports.

“I truly hit rock bottom,” the 25-year-old pop star writes. “I was like a bad kid running around with ADD.”

Miss Spears completed a monthlong stay at a luxury Malibu rehabilitation facility in March after a series of run-ins with the paparazzi that included a stop at a San Fernando Valley hair salon, where she was caught on video shearing her own locks. Other photos appeared to reveal Miss Spears out partying wearing nothing underneath her short skirts.

She also was photographed going out with Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan after filing for divorce from aspiring rapper Kevin Federline in November, just two months after giving birth to their second child, Jayden James. The pair also have a 20-month-old son, Sean Preston. The couple reached a divorce settlement in March.

Explaining her recent behavior, she says: “I think it is actually normal for a young girl to go out after a huge divorce.”

Elsewhere on her site, she writes: “We will never really understand or figure out life completely. That’s God’s job. I can’t wait to meet him … or her. Love, Britney.”

Police story

The Police kicked off a reunion tour Monday before a sold-out crowd of 20,000 — not bad for a group playing its first stadium in more than 20 years.

Fans in Vancouver, British Columbia, took to their feet and sang along as the concert opened with “Message in a Bottle,” the band’s 1979 smash hit.

The trio of singer-bassist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland followed that with a six-minute rendition of 1982’s “Synchronicity.”

The Police broke up in 1984 at the height of the band’s success. Sting, 55, Mr. Summers, 64, and Mr. Copeland, 54, have since pursued individual careers. The band is hoping to rival recent outings by the Rolling Stones and U2 and will join a crowded reunion lineup this summer that includes Genesis, Van Halen and the Eagles.

The Police have scheduled 21 gigs in the United States and Canada, including a stop at the Virgin Fest in Baltimore on Aug. 4.

On the town

Bobby Brown apparently has a new lady friend.

The former Mr. Whitney Houston was in the Hamptons this past week, where cameras spotted him giving new girlfriend-manager Alicia Etheridge a quick kiss on the lipsbefore heading into club Stereo on the Shore, TMZ.com reports. Once inside, Mr. Brown tried to prove he’s still got the moves and performed his past hits, “Every Little Step” and “My Prerogative.”
