Woody Austin might be the best overall athlete on the PGA Tour. Yeah, better than Tiger. The Rover’s interest in Austin’s trans-golf abilities was piqued after Austin’s straight-faced statement Friday that he had “taken all comers” on the ping-pong table in the U.S. team room. Asked if that included previous team pong standouts Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, Austin replied: “I’ve played and beaten everyone but Tiger. He won’t play me. Tiger’s seen my game, and he knows he can’t beat me.”

Former PGA Tour player John Maginnes then confirmed Austin’s athletic prowess.

“Woody is a freakish athlete. Scott Gump and Scott Medlin were on the golf team at Miami with him [Austin graduated in 1986], and they tell incredible stories about the guy. Jimmy Johnson wanted him to walk-on as the kicker because Woody was money from 50 yards and in. And I know you wouldn’t think it looking at him now, but Woody could dunk a basketball with two hands back in the day. He’ll still chew up anybody out here in HORSE.”

Who knew? Accountant. … Aquaman. … Athlete. … Awesome.

We can now close the books on a golf season that gave us Zach Johnson in a green jacket, Angel at Oakmont, the inaugural AT&T; National, Paddy putting the kibosh on Europe’s major drought at Carnoustie, Tiger’s baker’s dozen in Tulsa and FedEx Cup coronation and Uncle Sam administering a Canadian clubbing.

So long until Augusta National.
