Things to watch for with the Nationals this offseason:

1. IMPROVING THE OFFENSE

The Nationals ranked last in the majors in runs scored. GM Jim Bowden wants to add a slugger to the middle of the lineup, but can he find that player via free agency or trade?

2. BOLSTERING THE PITCHING STAFF

A young and promising rotation could use some veteran influence. The Nationals would love to add a reliable, experienced arm to help Shawn Hill, Jason Bergmann and Matt Chico develop.

3. SORTING OUT LOGJAMS

The Nationals have an abundance of first basemen (Nick Johnson, Dmitri Young), middle infielders (Cristian Guzman, Felipe Lopez, Ronnie Belliard) and outfielders (Austin Kearns, Ryan Church, Wily Mo Pena, Nook Logan, Ryan Langerhans). Could some of those extra players be on the trading block?

4. MOVING INTO THE NEW BALLPARK

The transition from East Capitol Street to South Capitol Street will take place in the spring. How much will the new stadium translate into on-the-field success?
