SEEN AND HEARD

Before 7:30 p.m. only two Thrashers-themed banners hanged from the rafters at 8-year-old Philips Arena — one signifying the team’s inaugural season in 1999-2000 and another because Atlanta will play host to this year’s All-Star Game. The Thrashers added a 2006-07 Southeast Division championship banner before the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

5Players on the Caps roster who scored at least 25 goals last season (Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Chris Clark, Michael Nylander and Viktor Kozlov).

QUOTABLE

“Olie deserves to play [at home]. It is always nice to play in your home opener. If you’ve got your ace pitcher in baseball, you are going to open with him at home, aren’t you?”

— Caps coach Glen Hanlon on his decision to start Brent Johnson instead of Olie Kozlig last night. The Caps’ home opener is tonight against Carolina
