The Nationals honored area firefighters before last night’s game. Players wore specially made “DCFD” hats during batting practice with curly “W” logos and “9-11-01” imprinted on one side.

Manager Manny Acta and closer Chad Cordero were presented with commemorative fire chief helmets before the first pitch.

It was a nice way to honor the District’s bravest, but wouldn’t it have made more sense to hold this event earlier in the week, as close to Sept. 11 as possible? Also, wouldn’t it have been nice if — like the Yankees and Mets have done — the Nationals wore the special hats during the game instead of only during batting practice?

BY THE NUMBERS

36Consecutive days Felipe Lopez went without an RBI. His sacrifice fly last night was his first RBI since Aug. 12.
