PHILADELPHIABen Eager’s goal 6:50 into the second period proved to be the difference in a 2-1 loss for the Washington Capitals in a preseason contest against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wachovia Center.

Eager one-timed a faceoff win by Jim Dowd past Caps goaltender Brent Johnson. Brian Sutherby had the lone goal for Washington, which was without most of its top players. Sutherby redirected a slap shot by Steve Eminger from the right point at 13:22 of the first period.

Former Caps player Boyd Kane scored Philadelphia’s first goal. He tipped in a shot from defenseman Braydon Coburn.

One night after Philadelphia”s Steve Downie drew a match penalty and automatic suspension for his vicious hit on Ottawa’s Dean McAmmond, the Flyers and Caps engaged in another chippy contest. There were two fights, with Donald Brashear and Riley Cote squaring off in the first period and John Erskine dropping the gloves with Jesse Boulerice in the third.
