Tire safety emphasized

National Tire Safety Week extends from Sunday through Saturday with emphasis on frequent checks of vehicle tires.

The Rubber Manufacturers Association has come up with an easy way to remember four steps for keeping tires safe all the time. It’s called doing your PART.

• P: Properly check tire pressure every month and before long trips. This includes the spare tire.

• A: Alignment should checked periodically to ensure proper tire wear.

• R: Rotation of tires should be done at least every 5,000 to 8,000 miles.

• T: Tread wear is crucial. Insert a penny with Lincoln’s head pointed down into the tread. If his head is visible, it’s time to consider new tires.

Doing your PART could save your life. According to the association, only 15 percent of U.S. motorists properly check their tire pressure.
