By Claire O’Donnell, age 13

The final seconds

Where everything counts

Every move made

Takes up precious seconds of time

For the clock is ticking

TEN …

The ball moves onto the court

Passed in from the side

NINE …

The ball moves down the court

Creating distress in the crowd

EIGHT …

Flying through the air

Scaring the crowd

SEVEN …

Into the waiting hands

Of the guard

SIX …

She turns to shoot

Trying as hard as she can

FIVE …

The crowd jeers

For her arms are up

FOUR …

The ball is aloft

It might make it in

THREE …

The crowd holds their breath

The ball soars farther

The focus of the room

TWO …

Time stops

Round and round

Around the rim

Circling

Toying with emotions

Ready to fall in or out

ONE …

And it’s in.
