SEEN AND HEARD AT REDSKIN PARK

It was strange to watch the offensive linemen waddle over to the main field from their individual drills in the far corner and see them trailing Rennie Simmons instead of Joe Bugel.

Boss Hog left for Arizona after Saturday night’s victory over Buffalo - during which his second unit performed admirably despite the absence of injured tackles Stephon Heyer and Todd Wade - to be with his 35-year-old daughter, Holly, who’s battling cancer. Bugel flew on Redskins owner Dan Snyder’s private plane and is expected to miss the entire week.

Tight ends coach Simmons, a former offensive-line coach with Atlanta, is taking Bugel’s place. Quality control coach Bill Khayat has assumed Simmons’ duties with the tight ends.

QUOTABLE

“He’s the poster child of taking full advantage of looking at his situation and saying, ‘I’ve got [those] three guys in front of me. How I’m going to make this team?’ And he’s gone ahead and made a difference.”

- Coach Jim Zorn on running back hopeful Marcus Mason

LONG SHOT OF THE DAY

CB CEDRICK HOLT 5-11, 171 North Carolina

The Redskins have three veteran starting corners in Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot. Leigh Torrence proved to be a capable backup last season while Byron Westbrook was on the practice squad. Justin Tryon was drafted this spring, and Matterral Richardson clinched the Aug. 4 victory over Indianapolis by returning an interception for a touchdown. And then there’s Holt, the only corner in camp who hasn’t gotten noticed. Holt was in camp with Tennessee in 2006 and with the Colts last summer, but he hasn’t made an impression with Springs lining up at safety and Rogers not playing. His days are definitely numbered.
