Washington Nationals television announcer Bob Carpenter was informed Friday night that he will return in 2009 for his fourth season with the club.

Carpenter, who has been the lead play-by-play voice on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network since 2006, had an option in his current contract that needed to be picked up by the team and the network by Aug. 1. Last September, he was told by the Nationals he wouldn’t be brought back before the organization switched course and re-signed him during the offseason.

“It’s just a relief because I didn’t have to go through anything like last year,” he said.

Game analyst Don Sutton is already signed for next year. Sideline reporter Debbi Taylor’s contract expires after this season; she has not been informed yet about her status.

“The main thing for me is I’m working with Don and Debbi. They’re just professionals and really likeable people,” Carpenter said. “I think we have as good a broadcast team as any in baseball. It’s a privilege for me to be a part of it.”
