ANALYSIS/OPINION:

The article “Israel didn’t know of cluster bomb use “(World, e-edition, Saturday) shows that Israel’s government continues to lie about acts that it commits against its neighbors, this time against Lebanese civilians in the summer of 2006. In fact, the Israeli government knew that its military had dropped 1 million deadly cluster bombs over Southern Lebanon in the last three days of the war. These bombs continue to kill and maim innocent Lebanese civilians, including children.

By dropping these bombs on civilians, Israel not only violated international law, but it also clearly violated the U.S. Arms Export Control Act. U.S. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy made this point in an April Senate Appropriations Committee hearing to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
