The Sunday editorial “Give the money back” was well-intentioned, but unfortunately, it falls well short of the action really required from Gov. Martin O’Malley and Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith.

You note that state and county officials appear to have been extremely generous with public funds for an individual who has blatantly flouted the law public officials have sworn to uphold.

Returning the $25,000 donated to their election funds represents merely a gesture. If the officials had the character necessary to faithfully fulfill the positions to which they have been elected, they would offer their resignations. Sadly, this is unlikely even if state prosecutor Robert A. Rohrbaugh eventually proves wrongdoing.

Integrity in public office seems to be a long-forgotten concept.
