Born: Tampa, Fla.

How acquired: Selected as a sandwich pick (No. 49 overall ) in the 2007 player draft in return for Jose Guillen signing as a free agent with the Seattle Mariners.

2007 statistics: Gulf Coast Nationals: 36 games, 128 at-bats, eight home runs, 32 RBI, .336 average. Vermont Lake Monsters, New York-Penn League, short season: 19 games, 70 at-bats, three home runs, 10 RBI, .286 average.

Nationals scouting report: “He has a strong, compact body. Michael had an excellent first year in pro ball. He has a very high ceiling. He has tremendous raw power with an extremely quick bat. The ball jumps off his bat with a different sound. He is solid defensively in right field with a plus arm. Should start the year in Hagerstown.” — Nationals farm director Bobby Williams
