SEEN AND HEARD IN FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA.

ORIOLES 11, NATIONALS 3

After two strong innings, right-hander John Patterson struggled. He gave up four runs in the third inning — two of them after catcher Humberto Cota mishandled a throw from Garrett Guzman that could have saved a run — and surrendered two more in the fourth.

Things didn’t get much better for the Nationals after that. Arnie Munoz gave up two runs in an inning, and after Washington scored two off Guzman’s homer in the sixth, the Orioles came back with three more in the seventh. Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera was downright nasty in his first four innings and finished with five strikeouts and two runs on five hits in 51/3 innings.

OVERHEARD

“That will be announced about the day before the season starts.”
