NEW YORK — Mark Fields, president of Ford America said he is curious to see the reactions of the public.

Ford is the market leader in the taxi segment with the Crown Victory and in 2005 introduced the Escape Hybrid taxi version in San Francisco and New York City.

With the Transit Connect, Ford is showing an affordable and relatively small car, but with a roomy and comfortable interior, that can be easily accessed.

The Transit Connect gets a 2.0-liter gas engine and an automatic transmission.

In the city it uses 19 mpg, which is 30 per cent more fuel efficient than the average taxi nowadays, while the emissions will be 90 percent lower than many of today”s traditional taxis.

The Transit Connect Taxi is designed, engineered and built by Ford of Europe.

The Transit is a well known commercial vehicle on European roads. After its launch in 2003, it was named International van of the Year.

The Transit Connect will come to the U.S. in the summer of 2009, as a brand-new offering for small business owners seeking flexible transportation with plenty of room to fit their needs.
