From combined dispatches

DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa college student was arrested after hurling several M&M candies at a police officer, according to a police report that said the student was “sticking up for a friend.”

Sean McGuire, 20, a student at Drake University in Des Moines, was charged with assaulting a police officer, the Des Moines Register reported this week.

Officer Theodore Lister Stroope was handling a hit-and-run drunken-driving incident at a convenience store when Mr. McGuire began throwing the chocolate candies, the report said.

University security officers at the store saw several pieces landing on the ground near Officer Stroope before one bounced off his shoulder, the police report said. According to the Register, citing the police report, Mr. McGuire told authorities that he was “sticking up for his friend,” the drunken-driving suspect.

Mr. McGuire proceeded to relieve himself in the back seat of Officer Stroope’s police vehicle on the way to Polk County Jail, the paper reported.
