MARYLAND
Today: Hilda Koontz uses letters, photographs, artifacts and music to bring to life the joys and sorrows of one Carroll County family during the Civil War. She portrays the elder sister of four young men who went off to war to save the Union. The event takes place from 2 to 3 p.m. at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine’s conference room in the historic Carty Building in downtown Frederick. VIRGINIA
Today: Falls Church Civil War Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cherry Hill Park, 312 Park Ave., Falls Church. The event includes firing and drilling demonstrations, a Civil War medicine tent, the Ladies Sanitary Commission, Thaddeus Lowe and his balloon adventures, spy stories, soldiers’ letters, live music and more. May 31: Military and civilian re-enactors will interpret army life in Union and Confederate camps at Fort Ward Museum’s annual Civil War Camp Day. There will be firing demonstrations, bayonet exercises, skirmish drills, camp cooking demonstrations and a camp laundress at work. The 17th Virginia Infantry, Company D, will perform Confederate drill and firing exercises. Suggested admission is $2 per adult and $1 per child.
