SEEN AND HEARD AT NATIONALS PARK

Several televisions in the Nationals’ clubhouse yesterday afternoon were tuned to the Brewers-Cubs day game from Wrigley Field, which meant a bunch of players watched when Milwaukee right-hander Yovanni Gallardo appeared to injure himself seriously in a near-collision at first base. Gallardo landed awkwardly on his right foot, and his lower leg buckled to the point everyone assumed he had broken a bone.

When the slow-motion replay was shown several times, the entire Washington clubhouse let out a collective gasp of horror. And when Gallardo got up to his feet and remained in the game, there was a look of astonishment on every player’s face.

QUOTABLE

It takes a load off your shoulders. You feel horrible as a teammate. You always want to help the team win in some way. It [stinks] going up there and striking out or rolling over a grounder in two pitches. It’s not a lot of fun. So it helps to get in there and do something positive for once.
