American Eagles

2007-08 record: 18-14, 11-3 Patriot League

Coach: Matt Corkery, first season

G3Pam Stanfield5-4Sr.

G2Talicia Jackson5-8Sr.

F1Brittany Bell6-2So.

C31Sahar Nusseibeh6-2Sr.

Top reserves:

F5Michelle Kirk6-0So.

G10Nicole Ryan5-8RS Jr.

Outlook: The Eagles were picked to finish third in the Patriot League. They surprised some by going undefeated on the road in league play last year but failed to take advantage of being the top seed in the conference tournament. New coach Matt Corkery, an assistant the past five years, is trying to guide American to its first NCAA tournament appearance.

Catholic Cardinals

2007-08 record: 10-15, 5-9 Landmark

Coach: Matthew Donohue, first season

G20Christina Rogers5-8So.

G12Kaitlyn O’Keefe5-7So.

F15Jenn Canale5-9So.

C34Lauren McPeak6-2So.

Top reserves:

G3Emily Brauer5-7So.

F24Kate Robinson5-9Jr.

Outlook: The Cardinals return several key contributors. Sophomore Brianna Peterson emerged as the team leader last season and earned second-team All-Landmark honors as a freshman. Matthew Donohue takes over for Margaret Carey, who left for her alma mater, Mount St. Mary’s.

George Mason Patriots

2007-08 record: 9-21, 3-15 CAA

Coach: Jeri Porter, first season

Pos NoPlayerHt Yr

F32Brittney Wilkins6-3Sr.

Top reserves:

G22Whitney Ward6-0RS Sr.

F3Amber Epps5-10Fr.

Outlook: The Patriots are rebuilding. Several players are sitting out this season because of transfer or injury, so they will rely heavily on their top seven. Coach Jeri Porter is looking for improvement more than anything else.

Georgetown Hoyas

2007-08 record: 15-14, 5-11 Big East

Coach: Terri Williams-Flournoy, fifth season

Pos NoPlayerHt Yr

G23Shanice Fuller5-8Jr.

G10Meredith Cox5-11Jr.

F30Jaleesa Butler6-0Jr.

F2Latia Magee6-2Fr.

Top reserves:

G22Kenya Kirkland5-8Jr.

F12Tia McBride6-1Fr.

Outlook: The Hoyas were picked to finish 11th in the Big East. They lost three of their top four scorers from last season, but seven returning players earned starts last season. Williams-Flournoy brought in a top-20 recruiting class, so Georgetown figures to take a step forward in a crowded conference.

George Washington Colonials

2007-08 record: 27-7, 12-2 Atlantic 10

Coach:Mike Bozeman, first season

Pos NoPlayerHt Yr

G23Erica Rivera5-8So.

G35Lisa Steele5-11RS Sr.

F34Ivy Abiona6-2Rs So.

C1Jessica Adair6-4Sr.

Top reserves:

G5Tiana Myers5-9Fr.

F21Jazmine Adair 6-3Sr.

Outlook: Longtime coach Joe McKeown left for Northwestern, but the transition to the Mike Bozeman era should go smoothly. Bozeman, who spent the past three years as an assistant under McKeown, inherits a Sweet 16 team that has one of the top frontcourt players in the country in Jessica Adair. The Colonials were picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 behind Xavier but are talented enough to win the league.

Howard Bison

2007-08 record: 4-26, 3-13 MEAC

Coach: Niki Reid Geckeler, first season

Pos NoPlayerHt Yr

G12Lonice Kenley 5-7Sr.

G11Zykia Brown5-8So.

F24Charae Baulkman6-1Jr.

C31Tamaya Daniels6-2Sr.

Top reserves:

F30Amanda Edwards6-0So.

G22Jalisa Pullins5-5So.

Outlook: Daniels, Howard’s lone returning starter, will be critical to the Bison’s success. Geckeler gets her first crack at running a team this year; how the team responds to her will go a long way in determining what kind of turnaround Howard can have.

Navy Midshipmen

2007-08 record: 7-23, 3-11 Patriot League

Coach: Stefanie Pemper, first season

Pos NoPlayerHt Yr

G23Angela Myers5-5So.

G13Kalen Kropa5-6Sr.

F43Kelly Altschul 6-2Jr.

C15Cassie Consedine6-3So.

Top reserves:

G21K.C. Gordon5-8Jr.

F32Morgan Hill6-1Jr.

Outlook: Like several other area teams, the Midshipmen want to forget a disappointing season. They are undersized but have a solid anchor in the middle in Cassie Consedine, an All-Patriot League candidate.
