Tears streamed down my face as I read Maj. Daniel L. Davis‘ beautiful tribute to the families that are left behind when their spouse/parent has a combat deployment (“The unequal sacrifice of soldiers,” Op-Ed, Tuesday). As a spouse whose husband was recently deployed to Iraq, such recognition is heartwarming.

Maj. Davis is not alone in his appreciation for what his family is going through. Many other military spouses do, indeed, understand what their deployment means to their families. However, to have such understanding publicly stated makes our time away from our spouse a little easier. On this day, Veterans Day, my kids were very much missing their dad and thinking of other Veterans Days when they were able to celebrate with him. Maj. Davis’ tribute is a gift I can share with my children, a beautiful acknowledgment of the sacrifice they also make so that their father can serve his country. A heartfelt thank you!
