ANALYSIS/OPINION:

“Bishops warn Obama about abortion issue” (Nation, Wednesday) portrays Catholic bishops as warning President-elect Barack Obama against implementing the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) that he promised Planned Parenthood.

The FOCA invalidates all laws regulating abortion, including partial-birth abortion and even state-informed consent and parental notification laws. The bishops are concerned that it also would require Catholic hospitals to kill the preborn.

No doubt Mr. Obama will seek a compromise FOCA that would placate Planned Parenthood in which Catholic hospitals would be excluded from performing abortions. Another $100 million on top of the more than $330 million it already is receiving annually from the federal government would likely satisfy Planned Parenthood to continue its genocide against black people.

The bishops will have to be united, determined and resolute in opposing FOCA in any of its compromise forms to save Mr. Obama from being known through history as the “abortion president” who exacerbated black genocide.
