Major League Baseball released the 2009 schedule for all 30 teams Wednesday, and the slate will bring the Boston Red Sox to the District for the first time since 1971.

The Red Sox will visit Nationals Park for a three-game series from June 23 to 25, the first time they have traveled to the District since the Washington Senators’ final season.

Other highlights of the schedule include:

cThe Nationals will open the season April 6 at Florida, playing three games there before traveling to Atlanta. Counting its own opener, Washington will take part in three home openers next season.

cWashington’s home opener is April 13 against Philadelphia.

cThe team’s first trip to the Mets‘ new ballpark is April 24-26; the Nationals will visit the Yankees’ new stadium from June 16 to 18.

cThe Nationals are on the road on Memorial Day against the Mets, at home on the Fourth of July against the Braves and off on Labor Day.

cA four-game series at Atlanta from Oct. 1 to 4 finishes the season.
