THURSDAY’S BEST BET ON TELEVISION

The American League Central-leading White Sox face Mike Mussina in their final game at Yankee Stadium. 7 p.m., WGN

LOCAL POWER RANKINGS

1. GILBERT ARENAS

Not one game into his new $111 million contract and he undergoes knee surgery. And thus begins a six-year drama of Arenas’ health and the Wizards’ fortunes being daily news.

2. JASON CAMPBELL

Coming off one of his top performances as an NFL starter, now comes the real test: putting together several strong games in a row. He has won consecutive starts only once.

3. ALEX OVECHKIN

The Moscow Dynamo is back in town for the start of Capitals training camp Friday. For once, there are high expectations for the Caps and for No. 8 in particular.

4. CHRIS HORTON

One start, one defensive player of the week award for the Redskins rookie. His athleticism gives Greg Blache some intriguing options in the secondary.

5. MANNY ACTA

The Nationals again are playing a role in the NL East race, defeating the Mets in September. From here, that means the young players and veterans still buy into Manny’s message.

TWT FIVE “ REASONS THE CAPITALS ARE AN INTRIGUING TEAM TO WATCH

1. Alex Ovechkin - He is the best athlete in the District, period. Nobody is even close in terms of his production and worth to a franchise.

2. The goaltending - The Capitals refused to overpay for Cristobal Huet (who was quite average in the playoffs), instead taking a moderate risk with Jose Theodore. His play will bear watching.

3. Mike Green - One of the league’s premier offensive defenseman, he’s great to watch on the power play, but the Capitals hope he’s better in his own zone and not prone to giveaways.

4. Sergei Fedorov - The team graybeard seemingly has played in the NHL for 35 years. He will be a great leader in the room for players like Ovechkin and Alexander Semin.

5. The coach - Bruce Boudreau helped turn around the team’s fortunes last year. Now he gets his first full-season shot in the NHL, and how he handles his roster will be interesting.
