HE SAID WHAT?

“It’s kind of a shocking thing.” — Mets left-handed reliever Scott Schoeneweis after the team blew its third save in a week

TAKE YOUR PICK » WHO SHOULD BE THE NEXT U.S. RYDER CUP CAPTAIN?

Paul Azinger: Why mess with a good thing? Azinger pushed all the right buttons in Louisville, Ky., cultivating by far the best U.S. team chemistry in recent Ryder Cup history.

Corey Pavin: A steely competitor throughout his career who authored a host of positive Ryder Cup moments, Pavin certainly looks the part. There are two significant negatives on the Pavin front, however. First, he hasn’t been a factor on the PGA Tour in a decade and thus has no real relationship with any of the young players likely to form the core of future U.S. teams. Second, Pavin was Tom Lehman’s vice captain for what turned into a debacle at K Club in 2006.

Davis Love: The classy winner of the 1997 PGA Championship and a Ryder Cup staple for more than a decade, Love is a lock to captain the squad at some point. He’s an excellent diplomat for golf, and he would make a gracious skipper. The one drawback with Love is he personifies the country club softness that has defined the Americans’ pre-Azinger slip in the event.

Mark O’Meara: Let’s see, this was the same guy who strongly advocated play-for-pay in the Ryder Cup. A man who doesn’t understand the spirit of the event doesn’t deserve to be the face of the U.S. squad.

Our take: Azinger definitely should get another turn in the captain’s chair if he wants it. Aside from a slightly heavy-handed approach to riling up the locals, Azinger didn’t make a single bogey at Valhalla. Recent U.S. captains have lost to inferior European teams … with Tiger Woods. Azinger’s bunch (with six rookies) dropped a heavily favored European bunch without him. Azinger deserves the right of first refusal with Love to follow.
