Like his brother Rush Limbaugh, David Limbaugh seems to hate liberals and liberalism (“Who is a hypocrite?” Commentary, Saturday). To the Limbaugh brothers, liberals are the scum of the earth and have the capability of bringing down America and civilization. According to them, their self-righteous ultraconservatism is always right on the issues.

Over the past 30 to 40 years, “survival of the fittest” Republicans have dishonestly distorted the good meaning of the word liberal and used it to connote liberalism and liberals as bad. With the ascendency of Sen. Barack Obama, a self-proclaimed liberal, liberalism is on the rise at the same time conservatism is waning. The past eight years of a failed Republican presidency cost the Republican Party control of both houses of Congress and opened the door of opportunity for liberals and liberalism to impact the country for good.

From the beginning, liberals made huge contributions to America’s growth and development. Liberals favor a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties. Liberals tend to be broad-minded and tolerant (especially in standards of religious beliefs and conduct). They are inclined to respect views and beliefs that differ from their own. Liberals usually are willing to give and share generously.

To the dismay of the Limbaugh brothers and other conservatives, an Obama presidency would work effectively for the “common good,” which would result in less and less demonizing of liberals and liberalism.
