WASHINGTON (AP) - Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske says he will take a balanced, science-based approach to drug policy if confirmed as the nation’s new drug czar.

In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kerlikowske also said he will help develop and put in place a strategy to help stem violence along the Mexican border.

President Barack Obama has nominated Kerlikowske as director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, commonly known as the drug czar.
