ATLANTA (AP) - Forward Marvin Williams returned to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday after missing 16 games with a lower back injury.

Hawks coach Mike Woodson inserted Williams, who averaged 14 points and 6.4 rebounds in starting his first 59 games this season, midway through the first quarter against the Indiana Pacers.

Drafted No. 2 overall after helping North Carolina win a national title as a freshman sixth man in 2005, Williams hit a 19-footer in his first game since he was injured March 7 against Detroit.

Woodson had indicated last month that Williams was a candidate for back surgery, but doctors cleared the 6-foot-9, 240-pounder to return to competition after a rigorous practice on Thursday.
