One is defensive and one is offensive.

The Russian leadership knows perfectly well that the deployment of a limited missile-defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic is no threat whatsoever to Russian sovereignty. Nonetheless, through public denunciations of the system and threats of reprisals, Russia's leaders help critics to galvanize public sentiment against missile defense.

I would much prefer to have some protection against rogue regimes that threaten the United States with missiles than to cave in to Russian or any other nation's provocations.
