SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA (AP) - Costa Rica defeated El Salvador 1-0 Wednesday in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying play on a goal by Walter Centeno.

Centeno headed in a pass from Carlos Hernandez at 69 minutes for the only goal of the match.

Costa Rica’s Andy Furtado failed on a penalty kick, stopped by goalkeeper Miguel Montes in the 25th minute.

Costa Rica has six points, behind the U.S. team with seven, the regional finals. El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago have two points apiece.
