NEW YORK (AP) - Cardinal Edward Egan, the archbishop of New York, has been hospitalized with stomach pain.

New York Archdiocese spokesman Joe Zwilling says Egan arrived at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan around 10 p.m. Saturday. Doctors ordered tests to determine the cause of the pain.

Zwilling says Egan was awake and alert when he arrived at the hospital.

The 77-year-old Egan is retiring this month from his post, which is perhaps the most influential in American Catholicism. The archdiocese serves 2.5 million Catholics in about 400 parishes. Egan has led it for nearly nine years.

Timothy Dolan, currently the archbishop of Milwaukee, will succeed him.
