I find it shocking that a supposedly scholarly study can claim, and Doug Bandow can repeat, the factually erroneous statement that “Berlin lit the fuse for the Yugoslav explosion by backing Croatian and Slovenian independence without insisting upon protections for ethnic minorities” (“Clear-eyed analysis of ‘Harm’ done by Balkan war,” Plugged in, Tuesday).

Germany only pushed for recognition after Serbian forces committed horrendous war crimes in Croatia, including the ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Croats, the obliteration of Vukovar and the bombardment of Dubrovnik. Claims regarding Germany’s culpability whitewash those primarily responsible for the war — the supporters of Greater Serbia.
