ANALYSIS/OPINION:

While Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, has good reason to be upset at the illegal immigrants draining the coffers of our federal programs, he misidentifies the real problem (“Liberal policies benefit illegals,” Opinion, Thursday). Immigrants help increase the economic output of our country and are invaluable in promoting the best use of our human capital. They typically do not compete directly with Americans for the same jobs but tend to expand the number of jobs in higher-paying and higher-skilled occupations.

Milton Friedman said it best: “It’s just obvious you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state.” The solution is not restricting the flow of immigrants to our shore. It requires opposing the left’s push for constant increases in government welfare.
