President Obama is flying to Copenhagen this week to attend the U.N. Climate Change Conference, whose aim is to reduce worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.

By flying from Washington to Copenhagen and back, Air Force One will emit roughly 800,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. If one factors in the required support aircraft, the total emissions add up to millions of pounds of carbon dioxide emitted.

I propose that Mr. Obama lead the nation by example by personally limiting greenhouse gas emissions. Rather than taking Air Force One on overseas trips, Mr. Obama should charter one of the Naval Academy’s offshore sailboats and sail to Europe with no emissions. The three-week sailing trip to Europe, followed by a three-week return trip, would remarkably improve the nation’s governance while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
