The Palisades neighborhood in Northwest Washington offers an eclectic mix of architectural styles. What ties this neighborhood together are tree-lined streets and a strong sense of community exhibited in places such as the local parks, the library, shops and restaurants where neighbors gather. The neighborhood is known for its annual, old-fashioned Fourth of July parade, a traditional event in which the whole village participates.

The Palisades attracts families and couples looking for a quiet, walkable part of Washington that has easy access to downtown, Georgetown, Tysons Corner and the Beltway.

Among the newer homes in the Palisades is the arts-and-crafts-style home at 5524 MacArthur Blvd., slightly hidden for added privacy behind an adjacent home and accessed by a brick path that is bordered by a white picket fence. No interior or exterior detail has been overlooked in this home, built in 2005 and now on the market for $1,675,000.

The brick walk leads to the brick-and-siding home, which features charming green trim around the windows, sloping rooflines and a covered front porch. The property was professionally landscaped and the builder preserved towering mature trees in both the front yard and backyard. There is a fenced backyard, a brick patio and an attached two-car garage.

Inside, the home features high ceilings, oversized windows, crown moldings, recessed lighting and hardwood floors. A two-story foyer is adjacent to a hardwood staircase with a wall of windows that allows sunlight to flood every level of the home.

The formal living room and formal dining room are linked by a wood-framed entrance. A niche in the dining room provides a perfect place for a bureau or buffet, and both windows have plenty of natural light along with recessed lighting.

A swing door links the dining room with the kitchen, which is open to the family room and provides a central hub for entertaining and family life. A two-level granite counter in the kitchen is the perfect place for informal dining and gathering with family and friends. The adjacent family room has a gas fireplace and windows on three sides, including a set of French doors.

The kitchen features both pendant and recessed lighting, along with pale granite counters that complement the creamy, furniture-grade cabinets with crown moldings. The upgraded, stainless steel appliances include double ovens, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a five-burner gas cooktop.

Hardwood stairs lead from the main level to the finished lower level, which has 9-foot-high ceilings and has been enhanced with a home theater system. The entire home has a surround-sound system for music and an intercom system, along with a high-tech wireless, cable and Ethernet system. Other amenities include a central vacuum system, three-zone heating and air conditioning and a security system that can be upgraded to include cameras.

In addition to the home theater, the recreation room has French doors leading to the brick patio and fenced backyard. Adjacent to the recreation room are a bedroom with a double-door closet, a full bath and multiple storage rooms, along with a door to the garage, which features extra storage space.

The hardwood staircase also leads to the first of two upper levels. The first level features a spacious master suite with a ceiling fan, double windows on two sides and a walk-in closet with a window. A gas fireplace adds warmth and romance to the room. The bedroom also has a second, double-door closet, which, like all the closets in the home, has an automatic light that turns on when the door is opened. The attached luxury bath includes a whirlpool tub set under a window, a double-sink vanity, an oversized separate shower and ceramic tile floors.

Two additional bedrooms on this level, each with a large double-door closet, share a connecting bath with a double-sink vanity and a separate compartment for the combination tub/shower. The third bedroom features windows on two sides.

This level also has a laundry room with a window and a sink.

The hardwood stairs lead to the finished fourth level that has a generously proportioned room with windows on two sides. Currently used as a combination home office, exercise room and guest space, this room has hardwood floors, a full bath and a walk-in closet.

The owners appreciate their home’s location within walking distance of many neighborhood amenities, and they also enjoy the privacy of their backyard. Tucked behind the home facing MacArthur Boulevard, they are able to take advantage of their proximity to the thoroughfare without being bothered by noise or worrying about pets or children getting too close to traffic.
