BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Police want to search the cell phone, computer records and diaries of a Virginia Tech doctoral student accused of decapitating another student in a coffee shop.

Investigators have asked a court for permission to search the records of Haiyang Zhu. Authorities say he was having coffee with 22-year-old Xing Yang (shin yung) of China when the attack happened Wednesday night.

The woman had arrived on campus just this month from China to begin a graduate program in accounting.

Investigators hope the phone, computer and other records they’re seeking will give them clues about what might have led to the attack. Witnesses told police the two hadn’t been arguing before the woman was killed.
