As communities such as Reston and Herndon fill up with more and more homes, it becomes harder and harder to find a property with an acre of land. A few older homes have this sought-after outdoor space, but the home at 11661 Preference Way in Herndon, built in 2001, offers the luxury of land along with the modern details preferred by buyers.

Built by Equity Homes Inc. as part of the Falls Ridge Estate Series, this home is now on the market for $1,074,989. This brick-front home rests at the end of a cul-de-sac, surrounded by a front lawn and woods encircling the back of the house. The home has a brick-front patio with columns. Sidelights and a transom surround the front door.

An asphalt drive leads to the three-car side-entry garage and to the lighted basketball hoop. This home has a level lot, which will make the addition of a rear deck or patio a simple task.

Inside, the home has more than 5,000 square feet of living space. All three levels have 9-foot ceilings, and throughout the home are floor-to-ceiling windows with transoms and plantation shutters.

The main level features hardwood floors that have been finished in place, and upgraded moldings and trim. The homeowners had this home professionally decorated.

The lighting includes a dramatic chandelier in the two-story foyer, along with a dining room chandelier and extensive recessed lighting throughout the home. The two-story foyer includes a Palladian window and oak stairs that have been split to allow a second staircase into the kitchen.

An arched opening links the formal living room and formal dining room, which have tall double windows at the front and back of the house, vaulted ceilings and wainscoting with chair-rail moldings. Beyond the formal entertaining rooms is the sunroom, which has three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows and transoms framing views of the woods.

Realtor Karen Brown, who also lives in this neighborhood, describes the community as very social. The homes have been designed for easy entertaining (both formally and informally) and for families to spend time together in the open kitchen, breakfast area and family room.

This open space, located across the back of the house, includes a family room with a gas fireplace flanked by windows, with another wall of windows facing the woods. Adjacent to the family room is the breakfast area, set in a wide bay window with wooded views.

The open center-island kitchen features professional-grade stainless steel appliances including double ovens and a five-burner downdraft cooktop. The oversized island offers plenty of space for casual dining, food preparation and cooking. The 42-inch raised-panel, glazed maple cabinets offer furniture-quality storage throughout the kitchen and underneath the island. The kitchen also has a built-in desk and a walk-in pantry.

Just past the kitchen are a coat closet and a mudroom/laundry room with storage shelves, ceramic tile floors and a window. Even the garage has additional storage shelving and built-in lockers.

The main level also features an art niche in the main hall and a powder room with ceramic tile floors. French doors lead from the foyer into the library.

Upstairs, double doors open into a generously proportioned master suite with a tray ceiling and a sitting room nestled into a deep bay window with views of the woods. The suite includes a luxury master bath and two separate walk-in closets.

The second bedroom includes a private full bath. The third and fourth bedrooms share a connecting bath with a double-sink vanity and ceramic tile floors. Each of the secondary bedrooms has a double-door closet with custom-designed built-in shelving and drawers. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan. A generously sized linen closet is in the hall.

The finished lower level features an open, extensive recreation room with new carpet, recessed lighting and multiple spaces for seating areas and game tables. One area, tucked underneath the breakfast area upstairs, echoes this shape of the bay window and includes two high windows. This basement has French doors that lead to the back yard.

The lower level also has a bedroom with two double-door closets. Nearby is a full bath with ceramic tile floors and an upgraded vanity. Extensive unfinished storage rooms could be finished for two additional rooms on this level. Several finished closets are also available for storing games, toys, books and more.

The pristine condition of this home, with all the custom touches and decorative elements in place, will make it easy for new residents to settle in and begin entertaining and making family memories.
