BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) Gov. Tim Kaine offered condolences today to friends and family of a graduate student from China who was killed on Virginia Tech’s campus.

Kaine also offered condolences to the Virginia Tech community. The governor called the slaying a “tragic attack” and says it has revived memories of the 2007 mass shootings at the Blacksburg school.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum says 22-year-old Xin Yang (shin yuhng) was stabbed and decapitated last night with a kitchen knife in a campus cafe.

Another graduate student, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu (hy-yuhng-joo) of Ningbo, China, is charged with first-degree murder.

Flinchum says the victim and Haiyang knew each other but no motive for the slaying has been determined.

The suspect is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail.
