The Illinois Senate opened the impeachment trial Monday against Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Mr. Blagojevich did not attend the trial because he was waging a national media campaign to argue that he cannot get a fair trial before the Illinois body.

There were no further details immediately from the proceedings of the Illinois Senate.

The governor is accused of trying to receive benefits from naming President Obama’s replacement in the U.S. Senate.

The Illinois Senate likely is to hear recordings by federal prosecutors that allegedly reveal Mr. Blagojevich discussing signing legislation in exchange for campaign contributions.
