ANALYSIS/OPINION:

On Dec. 31, 1978, as a 26-year-old reckless drunk, I quit alcohol. Ironically, I took my savings from pipe-welding in January 1980 and created a pretty successful bar and package-goods store.

Just three sober years of mixing and serving drinks for others filled with loneliness, pain and depression affirmed my 1979 New Year’s resolution.

On New Year’s Eve 2008, I walked down the partying-packed Duval Street in Key West, Fla., with feelings of victory and sadness. In 2009, my resolution is to continue celebrating 30 years of sobriety.
