ANALYSIS/OPINION:

That the Supreme Court has chosen excellence over diversity is good for America (“5-4 ruling reverses Sotomayor decision,” Page 1, Tuesday). A society that scorns excellence in firefighting (because firefighting is a humble activity) and tolerates diversity in its legal opinions (because the law is an exalted activity) will have neither good firefighting nor good judgments. Neither its houses nor its laws will survive the flames.
