PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in the Florida Panhandle say they have someone in custody in the slayings of a Florida couple known for their large family of adopted children.

Byrd and Melanie Billings of Beulah were killed in their home Thursday as eight of their children slept. It happened in a rural area west of Pensacola near the Alabama state line.

Police say the couple had an extensive surveillance system in the house that recorded three apparently experienced criminals who drove off in a red van.

The Pensacola News-Journal reports that Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan says a suspect is in custody. A press conference is scheduled for later.

The couple adopted children with developmental disabilities. They owned several businesses and had 16 children, 12 of them adopted.
