ANALYSIS/OPINION:

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Like any nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor should be evaluated on her qualifications and experience. She is an eminently qualified nominee: If confirmed, she would bring more federal judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice in 100 years and more overall judicial experience than anyone confirmed for the court in the past 70 years.

Your recent editorial suggests that some of us in Congress would like to see the judge evaluated on attributes other than her qualifications (“Song of Sonia,” Editorial, Thursday). That is not the case. In the quotation you reference, I was simply making the point that those of us in the Hispanic community are proud that such an accomplished adjudicator hails from our community. All we ask now is that the Senate assess her fairly based on her record, qualifications and view of the law. If that happens, I am confident she will be confirmed.

REP. NYDIA M. VELAZQUEZ
