Strong words between women aren’t uncommon on Bravo’s “Real Housewives” franchise. What viewers witnessed on this week’s season finale of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” might have been a catfight to end all catfights, though. Danielle Staub, who made headlines when one of the ladies found a book detailing Miss Staub’s arrest and purported former life as a stripper and prostitute, confronted her co-stars about spreading rumors. Her accusations angered Teresa Giudice, who launched into an expletive-laden rant and flipped over a table on Miss Staub, sending glasses of red wine flying — all while somebody’s little girl stared wide-eyed at the proceedings.

1. Bette Davis and Joan Crawford — Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie have nothing on this pair. The two actresses at the top of their game didn’t just fight deliciously on-screen in “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” They feuded in private for years, making catty comments about each other we can’t print in a family newspaper.

2. Joan Collins and Linda Evans — “Dynasty” didn’t become the iconic nighttime soap until the second season, when Miss Collins joined the cast in an episode titled “Enter Alexis.” The former Mrs. Carrington and the current Mrs. Carrington, played by Miss Evans, brought very physical catfights — in a beauty salon and a lily pond, to name just two memorable moments — to prime time.

3. Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine — When Miss Bancroft tosses a drink in Miss MacLaine’s face in “The Turning Point,” a drama about two rival ballerinas, the latter’s expression of shock is real — the move was improvised.

4. Cameron Diaz and Jessica Biel — As “Housewives” proved, catfights aren’t found just in classic film and television. Just two years ago, organizers of the MTV Movie Awards had to ensure that these two beauties didn’t run into each other after Miss Diaz reportedly screamed at Miss Biel when the older actress found the younger flirting with her ex, Justin Timberlake. It’s too bad this one never got physical — these are two of the buffest babes in Hollywood.

5. Uma Thurman and just about every other woman in “Kill Bill” — The Bride might have been seeking her ultimate revenge on the title character, played by the recently deceased David Carradine. In the four hours-plus she spent looking for him, though, she did on-screen battle with an assortment of other female fighters, including Vivica A. Fox, Lucy Liu and Bill’s new lover, played by Daryl Hannah.
