WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department says a Peace Corps worker has been found dead in the west African nation of Benin and has sent a security officer to determine if foul play was involved.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said the female volunteer’s body was discovered early Thursday outside her home in a village several hours from the capital of Cotonou where she had been working at a school.

Wood declined to identify the woman pending notification of her family by the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps had no immediate comment.

Wood said the government of Benin has expressed condolences to the U.S. Embassy in Cotonou and has pledged full cooperation in the investigation.
