WASHINGTON (AP) - Authorities say the Washington-area Metro subway system has stopped running trains at a downtown station near the White House after a man was struck and killed by a train.

D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter says the man somehow came off the platform at the McPherson Square station and was hit by a train about 1:15 p.m. Friday. Etter says the man suffered traumatic injuries.

Metro officials say both of the two lines that use the station are not running. Shuttle buses were being used to move passengers between adjacent stations.
