MARYVILLE, ILL. (AP) - The minister who was gunned down last Sunday in his southwestern Illinois church is being remembered as a man who worked tirelessly for his congregation.

Mourners packing into First Baptist Church in Maryville listened as a speaker told them that the Rev. Fred Winters would want them to continue their Christian mission.

Before the service, the parking lot and the road leading to the church were packed with cars. A white hearse sat outside the main entrance of the sprawling brick building.

Prosecutors say Terry Sedlacek (SEHD’-lak) killed Winters during the church service as congregants watched in horror.

Sedlacek was released from the hospital Thursday and taken to jail. His attorney has entered a not guilty plea for him.
